The Root’s Story

anniversary 2k14

Savannah and John met in college and quickly became friends. Two things they both shared was a heart for their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and for the mission of God. They were both pursuing their callings at CSU, studying for a Religion (Christian Studies) degree. During their time in school, God showed them many things. Savannah continued to develop a heart for foreign cultures, spreading the gospel, teaching, and loving on kids. John was also developing a heart for foreign cultures, teaching, and discipleship. Although most aspects of their future remained unclear, there was one thing God made abundantly clear to both of them: they were meant to be together.

Over the first two years of their marriage, John as been serving full-time as the Director of Connections and Discipleship at Journey Church and Savannah has been working as an Optometric Technician. Over the past six months, it seemed as if God was stirring up a single idea in both their hearts: maybe God had something else in store for their future.  This led to a scary question: “What’s next?”

Right as it seemed that God was pushing John and Savannah out into the unknown, they took a trip. On their first mission trip as a couple, the Roots found themselves at the Good Shepherd Children’s Home. GSCH is home to over a hundred kids from various difficult backgrounds: orphaned, abandoned, abused, or neglected. On the same property, the Good Shepherd Christian Academy seeks to provide high quality, bilingual education rooted in the gospel of Jesus Christ that is preparing students, from the home and the surrounding community, for a bright future. They loved everything: the people, culture, geography, weather, food… but they especially loved the work that God was doing and the dreams GSCA had for their future ministry. With a bilingual program already in place, GSCA had hopes to continue to expand the program to include more grades. They also wanted to expand their offerings to include a more robust liberal arts program: music, art, sports, etc. On top of all this the Academy had hopes of building an after school sports program.

As the trip came to a close, John and Savannah began to process what God was doing in their hearts. They saw that God was showing them needs that lined up perfectly with their passions. After prayerfully walking through the application process, the Roots are going to Honduras to work as teachers in the Good Shepherd Christian Academy!
